I have been playing way too much Pokemon TCG Pocket. I mostly used to play it for the simple pleasure of card collecting. They do a great job with the animations, as a Pack Opening Simulator. There's a lot of illusion of choice, like when you go to open a pack, there's a circle of them for you to choose from - you can spin them around and find the that's flipped backwards (clearly special!), or you can rotate them around yourself and do your own rituals of superstition. The animations and sounds are all very tactile and satisfying, like the foil crisply tearing, and the shuffle of your new cards slotting themselves away. They have nice-looking rare versions of cards, like gold ones, and full art cards with immersive animations. And their latest series of booster packs introduced shiny cards, which are very pretty and fun to collect too!

But then came the new PVP ranked mode.

can't believe that before I was obsessed with birds I didn't know what my favourite season was -- each season has its benefits and drawbacks, after all.

but now it's obvious that spring is the best season! and not just because of the spring bird migration (though obviously the spring migration is great). looking for birds, looking at birds, and spending time in environments that birds like: all of these things have opened my eyes to all the other joys of springtime as well!

and spring begins as early as february now for me, because the signs of spring I know how to recognise can begin that early, whereas I used to feel like it wasn't really spring till the trees started leafing in may!

two

the more you befriend people who go by a noun as a name, either online or in person, the more you get to have fun tripping up on words in sentences, like "hey why's this blog post about architecture mentioning my frien --oh right. words means things!" it's great. genuinely recommend.

three

the curse of the crafter: looking at things and going "ok but I could make that tho"

ok but WILL you. and do you have the time!

it's amazing how many things I confidently believe I could make at this point

four

I really love that Queer as Fact puts significant effort into talking about as many different queer people as possible, from many different racial and cultural backgrounds, even when the subject is challenging to find info on in english or at all. And they do a good job at working to be respectful of people groups they're not a part of, and at being up-front when there's things they don't know.

Every individual episode is interesting of course, but also the impression that builds over time as you listen through the archive is a deeply felt sense of the intellectual truth I already knew, that queer people have always been present no matter where you go. It's nice!

five

did you know: anne carson translations of greek tragedies good actually. anne carson good at words. greek tragedies compelling and delicious. theatre!!!

a meme that's been going around! I have been tagged by various ppl, and please do it too if you want to!

1. How many works do you have on ao3?

If we're just looking at the fanfic, I'm at 50. Dang that is many!

2. What's your total ao3 word count?

Currently at 114,681!

3. What are your top five fics by kudos?

truth can find the strangest home, svsss moshang (923 kudos)

If love is what you're after, inception arthur/eames (685 kudos)

revelations from a layover flight, svsss cumplane (231 kudos)

habitat, behaviour, svsss bingqiu (195 kudos)

as free as my hair, mcu steve & bucky (163 kudos)

4. What fandoms do you write for?

Currently: mxtx's three books are on constant rotation in my head and have been for several years. This is by far the most fic I have ever written for a fandom!

5. Do you respond to comments? why or why not?

I do try to! But sometimes I forget, or get overwhelmed, and then all of a sudden it's been years and it feels a bit late! I'm much better at it in recent years, at least, than I was in the early 2010s.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Hmmm I think when I go for non-happy endings they're usually more bittersweet than angsty... like, for example, "I know what that song means now" (mdzs, jyl/jzx), where the viewpoint character is satisfied with her choices and priorities but narrative doom is hanging over her. And I have several other fics too with the impending threat of narrative doom as the main closing emotion.

For a different approach I also have "promises" (cremation of sam mcgee), but that's creepy rather than angsty.

I really don't think I have written any fics with a specifically angsty ending!

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I think the most uncomplicatedly happy ending would be either "habitat, behaviour" (svsss, bingqiu), or "bodies, talking" (mdzs, jyl/jzx), both of which have endings focused on basking in the ways a good relationship with a partner who understands your needs can be so fulfilling.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have gotten occasional complaints but never straight up hate, so far! At least, that I can remember, lol. Sometimes a bad memory is helpful!

9. Do you write smut?

Sometimes! When it suits the needs of the fic I feel moved to write. It can be a really fun aspect of a character or relationship to explore!

10. Do you write crossovers?

I used to be a lot more into crossovers when I was younger. These days there's a much higher bar to clear for me to be into a crossover idea. The last crossover I wrote was in 2014!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Other than the inevitable LLM bot scraping, not that I'm aware of.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I vaguely recall having been asked once or twice, but I don't think anything ever came of it.

13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

I did occasionally, in long ago days, but I haven't cowritten in many years at this point.

14. What's your all time favourite ship?

Too hard to answer! I refuse!!! How am I supposed to choose between so many amazing ships!

15. What's the wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

The wangxian telepathic bond. Longing sigh....

16. What are your writing strengths?

Vibes, themes, characters.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Plot, fast-paced action or adventure, snappy conversations, that kind of thing.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I think there are contexts where it can be an effective choice to include untranslated dialogue, and I think that I'm not qualified to write the kinds of fic where it would be an effective choice.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

As far as I am aware, the fairy tale Cinderella, when I was about 8 years old.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

Look, my fave is usually whatever I've most recently finished! Because it's what's been occupying my mind the most! Soooo it's either my yet-unposted jingyi fic (just needs me to figure out how to implement an improvement suggested by my beta), or my mxtx remix fic (won't be revealed till April 18, and won't be revealed as being by me until April 25)! So you don't get to read either of them yet. But SOON!

Hello friends. Here's a quick rundown of, uh, Me. I blatantly stole the formatting from gibbles because I think it makes things easier.

Name:
loyalhorror, Horror or Jon or Bard or whatever else you know me by are all fine
Pronouns: They/them are always a good catchall but any are fine.
Age: I am an adult!
Location: Scotland
Fandoms: A whole bunch but most recently it's been BG3, FFXIV, The Sandman, Arcane and IWTV to varying degrees. I also just started playing Warframe thanks to gibbles so I guess that too!
Posts about: Hmm probably anything and everything but it'll most likely be video games and other media I've enjoyed lately, with a kind of fannish flair. I like talking about the fanfiction I'm writing or the characters I'm creating, whether I "do" anything with them or not! I might do little life updates too, they'll always be tagged as 'personal' if you don't want to see those (which is absolutely fine). If anything gets heavy it'll be locked behind the um... access... thing.

I don't really know what the general etiquette here is like, but I'm here to meet new people and to read your thoughts (normal phrasing), so you're not going to annoy me by interacting. I don't like fandom discourse and will always try to steer clear of it; my view on basically everything is "write whatever you want forever" and "don't like don't read".

Since I've opened the post floodgates on 4/13, I'd be remiss to not acknowledge it, no?

Happy 4/13 everybody (^_^)

What's brought me to Dreamwidth?

I'm brand new to Dreamwidth, never used it before...
I've spent the last few days lurking, seeing what it's like... It feels somewhere between Tumblr and a forum. I like that! I enjoy the level of personalization that can be achieved, and I like the extremely bare-bones algorithm (Latest 1000 Posts).
My only gripe is that I'm having a difficult time finding people I'd like to subscribe to, but I suppose I'll find people in time. I figure I should post myself, put out some feelers... Helloooo people... Anyone out there...? lol. So consider this to be my first attempt at that (~~o.o)~~  (That's me putting out my feelers).

The reason I've decided to try out Dreamwidth is that every other social media feels so claustrophobic to me! Too many people I know are on too many sites! Other than some Mastodon instances but, God, even those I feel like I'm two degrees away from being spotted, found out. I'm being paranoid, but even knowing that I still can't shake the feeling. I'd just really like to get away from places where I feel judged or fearful of being dogpiled. So, here I am. Hopefully I'll feel like I can breathe and actually make some posts.. (~_~) I've tried journaling on a self-made website before but, argh, I crave social interaction!

What will I be posting about, though? I've been asking myself that the past couple of days. These are what have come to mind:
  1. Plurality and 'kin stuff? I know that there are a number of people here who post about their plurality, so maybe I'll do that too. Not that I have a lot of experience with being plural, but I'd like a place to talk about it, so I'll pick here. For me, it's pretty connected to fictionkin stuff, so it's sort of a package deal.
  2. Uh... complaining. If I'm being honest, I'm probably going to complain about some other online spaces I'm in. Sorry... I generally don't like to contribute to negativity, but I'm considering this a practice in unlearning people pleasing behaviors. Is that just a rationalization...? Meh. Well, it's not hard to simply not read things, is it? So, I'll do it anyway. I'm making it a rule that I'm posting for myself first and foremost, rather than what I end up doing on every other social media and filtering myself so heavily that I may as well not be there at all...
  3. Special interests and hyperfixations of course! Generally I love animals, so maybe I'll share things I've learned; last week I randomly became obsessed with pterosaurs, especially Quetzalcoatlus, maybe I'll post about them. A couple of long term interests of mine are Will Wood and Livly Island, so I'll almost certainly be talking about those.
  4. Minecraft??? For some reason I'd really like to log my Minecraft adventures. I've attempted to start a Forever World recently, so maybe this is where I'll share about that.
I'd say that my goal is just to have a place to talk at length about whatever is on my mind, in hopes of connecting with like-minded people (^_^) Plus I just enjoy having an archive of stuff to look back on.

We'll see where the wind takes us...

Thanks for reading!
